Being an archipelago that is home to myriad pristine white sand beaches, azure waters that teems with marine life, and a hospitable population, Maldives is indeed a paradise retreat. If you are planning to visit the Maldives anytime soon here is a guide on how you could enjoy a hassle-free vacation in the paradise islands.

Book your accommodation in advance

The Maldives is renowned for its luxurious accommodation options that feature overwater villas, beach house and private abodes. These abodes come replete with modern amenities and furniture that offers you maximum comfort. If you are planning to stay at one of the Maldives island resorts the likes of Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives it is a must to make a reservation well in advance since most of the resort properties will be booked fully during most times of the year.

Travelling to your resort

There are only a handful of accommodations at the capital city – Male and the whole point of holidaying in the Maldives is to experience the bliss at its remote islands. So, visiting your resort will always involve in taking a boat ride and most of the times you can get there by seaplanes as well. So it is necessary to sort out your transportation method before you arrive at the Maldives. Most of the resort properties also provide speed boat or seaplane transfers to their properties and some even have it included in their packages.

Laws and norms in the Maldives

Do remember that the Maldives is an Islamic nation and the people who live here are a bit conservative. So you should be very cautious about your behaviour and the things you do when visiting the countries populated islands. Public displays of affection (PDA) is completely frowned upon here and it is recommended that you should dress conservatively when you are planning to visit the island where locals live. You are free to wear whatever you like at your resort but that too has some limitations depending on where you stay. So make sure that you go through the resort's guidelines before you book your stay. You could also not bring in any artefacts or objects belonging to any other religion than Islam when entering the Maldives. Bringing in pork products and alcohol is also prohibited although you could consume them at your resort properties.

Any type of drugs or intoxicants is considered illegal and possession may result in huge fines and penalties which can even go up to imprisonment for life!

Travel safety

The Maldives maintains the highest standards when it comes to travel and all of the boat operators and captain are highly trained. But you should be cautious and vigilant at all times when you are using a boat or seaplane for transport and you will have to ensure that you adhere to the instructions you will be given.

Safety for LGBTQ

Maldivian law is against Homosexuality and it could even result in imprisonment. However, there have been no incidents in the past where couples have been arrested or harassed while they were in the islands. But, just to be on the safe side, avoid PDA when in public places.

Other safety measures

When you are in the waters of the Maldives, be it for diving or snorkelling, refrain from touching or interacting with the local marine life. Some may be poisonous and some of your actions could also damage the fragile oceanic ecosystems of the Maldives. Also, it is not recommended that you venture far into the oceans alone while you are snorkelling or swimming since there will be strong currents underwater. If you are travelling here with your children, do not let them wander around by themselves and keep them close to you at all times!
