How to Ride a Jet Ski – Zip Across the Waters on Your Maldivian Escape!

Planning on heading over to the Maldives for your next holiday? Watersports is the lifeblood of the country, especially when it comes to keeping guests entertained. With more than 99 per cent of the country being water, this is no surprise. One of the most easy-to-try watersports for newbies is jet skiing, and it’s a watersport that’s ubiquitous in the Maldives. Before you go, read up on some useful tips that’ll help you get started with jet skiing.

Step One – Head Over to a Watersports Centre

If you want to go jet skiing in the Maldives, you’ll need to make your way over to a watersports centre. If you’re staying in the capital, Malé, there are some standalone watersports centres that you can head to. Once there, you can pay a fee to rent a jet ski. If you’re a beginner, make sure to ask an instructor to come out into the water with you and show you the ropes. Or if you’ve booked yourself into a Maldives water villa at one of the many luxury resorts the country has to offer, such as Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, then you’ll be able to head to the on-premises watersports centre. Almost every resort in the Maldives that has watersports activities on the premises offers jet skiing. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, there’s always something for everyone. From solo rides to jet skiing lessons, you’ll be covered.

Step Two – How to Ride the Waves Like a Pro

Jet skiing is not all smooth sailing, but that’s part of the fun! When you’re out in the ocean, unlike in a lake, the water’s surface is not going to be still. There are going to be waves. So how exactly can you ride the waves like a pro on your jet ski? Here are two tips. Firstly, remember to take on big waves at right angles. Secondly, make sure not to accelerate and try to speed over them with force. The best way to tackle them is to jump the waves at a controlled pace. Of course, if you’re a beginner, make sure that you’re always out there with an instructor or an experienced member of your family or travel party. If you’re the one doing the manoeuvring, remember to listen to their instructions while you’re out in the water.

Step Three – Don’t Give Up

While jet skiing is one of those watersports that is easy to have fun with as a first-timer, if you really want to master it, that can take some practice. So make sure not to give up after just a few rounds if this is a sport that you want to pick up some serious skills in.

 Step Four – Always Jacket-up

Safety always needs to come first. So make sure that you always wear a life vest or jacket before you head out into the water. The watersports centre will provide you with one. Make sure that you choose the right size and fasten it up properly before you get onto your jet ski. If you have the wrong size or fail to properly tighten it, it’s not going to be much use to you if you fall into the water.

Step Five – Satisfy your Need for Speed Safely

Safety always needs to come first. If you’re a beginner to the sport but want to zip over the waves at high speed, then ask your instructor to accompany you and take you on a ride. You can sit behind them and get a taste of how it feels to navigate the waves like a pro at high speed while staying safe. If you practice your skills, you’ll soon be able to do the same yourself!
