How to Travel Around in Zambia

From the stunning Victoria Falls to national parks home to exotic animals, Zambia offers intrepid travellers an adventure of a lifetime. There is much to see and do in this nation which spans a huge landmass so transport options are well worth looking into before you depart. By Air

Those looking to head to key cities or towns that are far apart can make use of internal flights. There are domestic airports in destinations such as Lusaka, the country's capital, as well as at Ndola, Kalabo, Mfuwe, Kitwe and Livingstone. Proflight is a domestic airline which offers internal flights, while various operators provide charter flights as well. Some accommodation providers will feature air transport too including the option of arriving at your Livingstone hotel via private helicopter!

By Bus

When it comes to cost-effective transport in Zambia, buses can be used though do keep in mind that long-distance journeys can be slow and quite tiring. Public buses serve all the main routes and some operate on a fixed schedule while you also get what are called express buses which are faster though slightly more expensive. Privately run express buses connect the capital with destinations such as Livingstone and Chipata and though more expensive are worth considering. For a truly local experience you can take a minibus but keep in mind they depart only when full, so you will be packed in!

By Boat

Travelling by boat is a great way to experience a fresh perspective of the natural beauty of Zambia and this form of transport is perfect for leisure purposes too. Ferries are available from Mpulungu to destinations like Lake Tanganyika, while private charters can also be found and are often more convenient. Some properties such as The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara offer water taxis or river safari boats as well; they provide hassle-free transfers, a chance to see wildlife along the Zambezi River as well as take in the mighty sight that is Victoria Falls.

By Car / 4WD

If you are looking for more adventure, you can hire a vehicle and set off on an epic road trip! Car hire companies can be found in places like Livingstone, Lusaka and Kitwe and apart from a range of vehicles, some even offer the option of hiring a chauffeur. Do keep in mind if you are heading to remote areas which will most probably have dirt roads, it's best to have a 4WD vehicle; take spare supplies, extra wheels and some jerry cans with petrol / diesel. Those with a drivers licence from SADC (Southern African Development Community) nations are permitted to drive here, while others will need to have an international drivers licence.

By Train

Another option of getting around is to use the train. The country's main train station is in Lusaka which is linked to destinations like Livingstone, Copperbelt, Kapiri Mposhi and Kitwe along various routes. Amongst the options available for travellers is the day train journey that departs from Kitwe at night, stops at Lusaka in the morning and reaches Livingstone in the evening. There is an express train that connects Livingstone and Lusaka which one can take as well.
