How to Spend a Week-long Trip in Laos - A Guide to Spending a Glorious Week in Laos

As one of the emerging holiday hotspots in Asia, Laos is fast becoming a popular destination for those who are in search of an off-the-beaten-path vacation hub. With a rich culture and natural beauty to boot, Laos' breathtaking landscapes are a stark contrast from some of the more congested tourist Meccas in the region. From hitting most of the country's best highlights to making the most of your stay, here are some tips on how to spend an unforgettable week in Laos.

 1. First 2 Days

Send your first day in Laos exploring the many attractions in the capital of the country. Vientiane is home to some of the best attractions in Laos and the historical sights alone make spending two days in this bustling city well worth it. Some of the highlights one should explore during the first two days in Vientiane include Pha That Luang, the iconic 45-metre Buddha stupa while temples such as Wat Si Muang and Wat Si Saket should also be on your Vientiane itinerary. The Patuxai Victory Gate is another landmark you should not miss in the capital as it was built to resemble Paris' Arc de Triomphe. The Black Stupa, the 16th-century religious edifice, is another must-visit attraction while wining and dining in the capital would not be quite complete without little French cafes lining the city.

 2. Day Three & Four

Drive four hours to Vang Vieng on your third day in Laos to spend time in the unusual beauty of this cave-lined small town. Ideal for hiking activities and trekking, it is possible to explore the countless caves occupying this area by yourself. Don't forget to drop by the Blue Lagoon and the Kaeng Nyui Waterfall on your second day in Vang Vieng while those who love more daring adventures can take a ride on a hot air balloon or signup for a white water rafting excursion in the area.

 3. Day Five & Six

Make a reservation at Avani+ Luang Prabang or any similar Luang Prabang hotels for your fifth and sixth days in Laos before heading out to this captivatingly historic area of the country with its French colonial structures and famed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wake up early in the morning to offer alms to Buddhist monks who walk along the streets to accept the gift of meals from devotees. Spend the first day in Luang Prabang with a tour of the Royal Palace and Museum and then hike up to the summit of Phousi Hill to take in the views. Spend the evening at Wat Chom Si Temple before winding down for the day. Start Day 6 with a hearty breakfast at the DaDa Cafe and shop till you drop at the local market where one can also purchase souvenirs and inexpensive clothes and accessories. Don't forget to bike across the mulberry farms of Ban Xang Khong – a village famous for its handicraft in Luang Prabang.  The excellent cafes in this area and the freshly roasted coffee should also be sampled during meal times.

 4. Last Day

Travel 31km away from Luang Prabang on your last day in Laos to witness the majesty of the Kuang Si waterfall. As the most famous cascade in Laos, no trip to the country would be complete without standing in awe of this breathtakingly beautiful natural wonder. On your way back to the capital, make a pit stop at the elephant rescue stations along the way. Do your research and ensure the elephant orphanages you visit are legitimate wildlife sanctuaries as there are dubious tourist traps that pretend to be the former.
