How to Spend a Day in Desaru – From Ostrich Farms to Sandy Shores

Are you going to be travelling to the state of Johor in Malaysia? If so, make sure to set aside a day or so in Desaru. From crocodiles, ostrich and fruit farms, to sun, sand, and surf, Desaru has a mix of things to offer guests. This coastal city makes for a tranquil beachside getaway away from the hustle and bustle of other cities in the state such as Johor Bahru or JB.

Step One – Unwind at a Beachside Resort

If you only have 24 hours to spend in Desaru, consider checking in for one night at a local resort such as Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas. Like many other beach resorts in Malaysia, an option such as this would offer you plenty of conveniences, all in one place. And since time is of the essence, it’s best to keep unnecessary travel to a minimum during your 24 hours. An example of some of the perks of staying at a resort include facilities such as onsite spas, swimming pools, direct beach access (offered by some resorts) and the activities that come with it such as beach volleyball. It’s a great way to spend most of your time in the coastal town unwinding away from the hubbub of busier parts of the state such as Johor Bahru. Enjoy lazy days on the beach as you take in the views of the ocean and sip on cocktails.

Step Two – Visit an Ostrich Farm

The Ostrich Farm is located in Sungai Rengit and makes for an interesting excursion spot while you’re visiting Desaru. Home to over 250 ostriches, it’s known for being Malaysia’s biggest ostrich farm. It can be a thrilling visit for those that like wildlife and have never seen an ostrich in real life before. At the farm, you can feed the ostriches vegetables and corn. It’s also thrilling to be able to see real-life ostrich eggs and understand just how big these eggs can be compared to the hen and quail eggs we’re used to seeing. Capture a few selfies of yourselves with the ostriches and with an ostrich egg as well, and then you’re done!

Step Three – Or, How about a Crocodile Farm Instead?

If you prefer reptiles to birds, then there’s a crocodile farm in Teluk Sengat that you can make an excursion to and spend an hour or two at. However, if you’re not interested in reptiles, then you might as well skip this farm since there’s not much else to do here.

Step Four – What About a Fruit Farm?

If you’d rather prefer to see fruit than ostriches and crocodiles, then head over to the Desaru Fruit Farm. This farm has been endorsed by the country’s tourism board and is known for its sustainable practices. And unlike the crocodile and ostrich farm, which offer only what their names suggest, the Desaru Fruit Farm is full of surprises. At the farm, you will have the chance to encounter over a hundred types of plants. But, apart from this, there are also some fun activities offered at the farm such as go-karting and paintballing. And there’s a petting zoo there as well.

So if you’re travelling with kids, make sure to spend a few hours at the Desaru Fruit Farm. The older kids are sure to be thrilled with the paintballing and go-karting, while the younger and older kids alike are all sure to enjoy the petting zoo. To top it all off, the farm also offers an opportunity for the kids to learn something educational during their holiday with regards to sustainable agricultural practices and fruit and vegetable crop varieties.
